GTA SA on Windows 10 Technical Preview (Fix for Black Screen and others)

| | Leave a Comment

So here I am after installing a brand new (let's just call it brand new, instead of buggy and incomplete) version of the next windows, the Windows technical Preview. Now I was genuinely pleased with their new release having a start menu with the metro look. It all seemed easy. But let me tell you one thing, it has a lot of bugs. Also these bugs we talk about, they are not easily deduced, they need to be taken care of neatly and patiently.
So just like all these bugs, I cam across this major one. Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas, a beautiful game I used to play as a kid. Now this game was residing on my hard disk for a lot of time. Also I had the DVD version (the non-steam one) which was working quite nicely till the time I used windows 7. But in Windows 8 it started having problems, they were later removed. But finally in Windows 10 technical preview, they were heavily problematic. I tried a lot of things to make it work and finally succeeded.
The problem was, a black screen in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas on Windows Technical Preview.

Here are the detailed instructions to go through to make the GTA SA game work neatly on Windows 10 Technical Preview.

1. Install Microsoft Directx 9
You can get directx 9 from here
(Or you could find it in various game setups, they are usually stored somewhere as an extra)

2. You need to install DirectPlay
  • Open Start menu and type - Turn windows features on or off and the application will come in the results, now start it
  • Find the folder named Legacy Components
  • Tick the feature - DirectPlay (ignore if already installed)

3. Download this file named 'DINPUT8.DLL'
Because the game then doesn't let us use the mouse.
32 bit - download
64 bit - download

4. Now right click the gta_sa.exe and select Compatibility options. There under the Run this program in compatibility mode for option select Windows 98.

5. Finally Run the gta_sa as Administrator.
And when it asks about the resolution, keep it as small as possible, don't pump it to high resolutions.  Change it later when into the game. Having big resolution at first run will make the game have a black screen.
